What's the extra bit?

A common sight in the Frozen North. You may well recognise this as a fire hydrant and a fine example it is too! This particular one is located right along the sidewalk at The Music Gardens featured in my previous post.

What some of you might not know and what yet others might be wondering about is the extra attachment. Yes, that "arm" sticking up. What might that be you may well ask. Any guesses?

Well, in this part of the world where we have snow throughout our winters, quite often snow falls tend not to melt and so accumulate, snow fall on top of snowfall. This, with the piles of snow shovelled to clear roads and sidewalks, could lead to a buried fire hydrant. This makes sure the fire department can easily locate the fire hydrant even in the middle of a snowy winter. One does not want the firemen delayed when they're coming to save your home and life's possessions.

I have to admit it took me a while to work it out when I first got here, but I can be forgiven surely, as I had no idea just how much snow might fall. We live and learn.

We had tons of these on the road north of Boise growing up. And most winters there was snow up to some point on them. Not so much any more.

Now that's what I call a neat idea, but do they leave them there year round.

wow... thanks again, for another amazing fact! :-)

We don't have those posts in our part of Ontario. We have men who come round and dig out the snow around the hydrants. I suppose they are the same men who in summer come round and wash those hydrants.

Great shot and idea, I was going to say its to stop you going further - used as a barrier.

What bliss to see a fire hydrant photo. I have a thing about fire hydrants, and have posted an example of our feeble Scottish ones at http://occasionalscotland.blogspot.com/2009/01/fire-hydrant.html. I'm setting out to collect examples from different countries, and I'd like to link to your post if that's okay?

They have those on the fire hydrants in Buffalo too.

Here via authorblog. It's a litle unnerving to think so much snow would fall that you'd lose your fire hydrants!

Gosh! I'd never seen an actual real life fire hydrant until I went to New York. Now here is one with an added extra!

Rob, your posts are brilliant...and often enlightening. Thank you!

I would imagine it helps the snow plow not run it down and thus cause a gusher, as well! Thanks so much for that explanation!
